Why the world misunderstood the cross

Dear friends,

Why has the world misunderstood the cross?

To the world, the cross represents weakness, shame, and defeat. In the days of the Roman Empire, crucifixion was a cruel punishment reserved for criminals. Therefore, many people could not understand how a man who died such a shameful death could be the Savior of the world.

But the world failed to understand God’s plan of salvation!

First, the world misunderstood the cross because it looked at Christ’s death as defeat rather than victory.

People saw Jesus suffering and dying, but they did not understand that through His death, He was dealing with our sin. Colossians 2:14–15 explains how Christ’s work on the cross brought victory over the powers of darkness.

Second, the world misunderstood the cross because it seeks human wisdom rather than God’s wisdom.

Human wisdom asks, “How can a crucified Savior save us?” But God’s wisdom declares that Jesus bore our sins and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.

Romans 5:8 says that God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Third, the world misunderstood the cross because it failed to see God’s love revealed through sacrifice.

The cross was not an accident or a failure. It was part of God’s plan to redeem sinful humanity. Jesus willingly gave His life so that those who believe in Him might receive forgiveness and eternal life.

Dear friends, the cross is not a symbol of defeat; it is a declaration of God’s love, the price of our redemption, and the foundation of our hope.

The world may see foolishness in the cross, but believers see the power of God for salvation!
