Live as If Today Is Your Last Day”

Main Text: Psalm 90:12 – “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12

Theme :- If today were your last day on earth, how would you live it?

Life is short. We do not know how many days God has given us. The Bible repeatedly calls us to live wisely, redeem our time, remain ready for eternity, and make every day count for Christ.

  1. LIFE IS SHORT—DO NOT TAKE TOMORROW FOR GRANTED

James 4:14 says:

“For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

Our life may seem long when we are young, but when we look back, the years have passed quickly.

Psalm 39:5 says:

“Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You.”

We make plans for tomorrow:

  • “I will pray tomorrow.”
  • “I will forgive tomorrow.”
  • “I will serve God someday.”
  • “I will preach the Gospel later.”
  • “I will reconcile with my family later.”
  • “I will come back to God when I am older.”

But tomorrow is not promised to us.

Proverbs 27:1 says:

“Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Therefore, live faithfully today.

  1. IF TODAY WERE YOUR LAST DAY, WOULD YOU BE READY TO MEET GOD?

Hebrews 9:27 says:

“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”

Every person has an appointment with eternity.

The question is not:

“How much money do I have?”

The deeper question is:

“Am I ready to meet my Creator?”

Jesus said in Matthew 24:44:

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Nobody knows when Christ will return or when our earthly journey will end.

Therefore, we should not postpone repentance.

2 Corinthians 6:2 says:

“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Not tomorrow.

Today.

  1. LIVE WITH ETERNITY IN YOUR MIND

Many people live as though this world is everything.

They spend their lives pursuing:

  • money,
  • possessions,
  • reputation,
  • success,
  • comfort,
  • pleasure,
  • recognition.

But Jesus asked:

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
— Mark 8:36

Imagine someone becoming extremely wealthy but losing his soul.

What has he really gained?

Jesus teaches us to think beyond this temporary world.

Colossians 3:2 says:

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Why?

Because earth is temporary, but eternity is forever.

2 Corinthians 4:18 says:

“While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

Live today with eternity in view.

  1. IF TODAY WERE YOUR LAST DAY, WHOM WOULD YOU FORGIVE?

One of the greatest tragedies is that people sometimes carry bitterness for years.

Someone offended us.

Someone rejected us.

Someone betrayed us.

Someone spoke against us.

And we say:

“I will never forgive them.”

But what if today were your last day?

Would that offense still be worth carrying?

Ephesians 4:31–32 says:

“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

Jesus said in Matthew 6:14:

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Forgiveness does not mean that what happened was right.

It means you refuse to allow yesterday’s pain to control today’s heart.

If today were your last day:

Forgive. Reconcile. Love.

  1. IF TODAY WERE YOUR LAST DAY, WOULD YOU TELL PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS?

Paul said in Romans 1:16:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.”

Think about the people around you.

Perhaps there is someone who needs to hear about Jesus.

Perhaps there is someone who needs encouragement.

Perhaps there is someone who needs prayer.

Perhaps there is someone who needs to know that God loves them.

We often say:

“I will tell them later.”

But we don’t know whether we will have another opportunity.

Paul said:

“Woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!”
— 1 Corinthians 9:16

Jesus commanded:

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
— Mark 16:15

If today were your last day, would you spend some of it helping someone find eternal life in Christ?

  1. LIVE EVERY DAY FOR CHRIST

Galatians 2:20 says:

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

Christianity is not merely about attending church.

It is about living for Christ every day.

Paul said:

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
— Philippians 1:21

What a powerful statement!

Paul’s life had one central purpose:

Christ.

Whether he was preaching, suffering, traveling, working, praying, or facing persecution—he wanted Christ to be glorified.

That should be our desire:

“Lord, let my life count for You.”

  1. MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT

Ephesians 5:15–16 says:

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Time is one of God’s greatest gifts.

You can lose money and earn it again.

You can lose possessions and replace them.

But you cannot recover yesterday.

Every morning God gives us another opportunity.

Another opportunity to:

  • pray,
  • read God’s Word,
  • love someone,
  • forgive someone,
  • serve someone,
  • preach Christ,
  • encourage someone,
  • obey God.

Therefore:

Don’t waste your day.

Don’t spend your entire life on things that have no eternal value.

  1. DON’T WAIT FOR A PERFECT DAY

Ecclesiastes 11:4 says:

“He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap.”

Some people are always waiting:

“When everything becomes perfect, I’ll serve God.”

“When I have more money, I’ll give.”

“When I have more time, I’ll pray.”

“When my problems disappear, I’ll serve.”

But life will never be perfect.

Serve God where you are, with what you have, today.

  1. LIVE HOLY BECAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW WHEN CHRIST WILL COME

1 Peter 1:15–16 says:

“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”

If we really believe eternity is real, our lifestyle should change.

We should ask:

“Would I be comfortable doing this if Jesus returned today?”

“Would I be comfortable saying this if Jesus were standing beside me?”

“Would I want Christ to find me doing this when He returns?”

1 John 2:28 says:

“And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.”

Live today in such a way that you would not be ashamed if Jesus came today.

  1. JESUS TEACHES US TO BE FAITHFUL UNTIL THE END

Jesus said in Matthew 24:46:

“Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing.”

Notice the words:

“will find so doing.”

Jesus wants to find us faithful.

If He comes today:

  • Will He find you praying?
  • Will He find you loving?
  • Will He find you forgiving?
  • Will He find you serving?
  • Will He find you witnessing?
  • Will He find you walking in holiness?
  • Will He find you trusting Him?

The goal is not merely to start well.

The goal is to finish well.

Paul declared near the end of his life:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7

What a testimony!

  1. WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE IF YOU KNEW TODAY WAS YOUR LAST DAY?

Imagine that you woke up this morning and God told you:

“You have only today.”

What would you do?

Would you spend the day arguing?

Would you hold bitterness?

Would you waste hours on meaningless things?

Would you continue living in secret sin?

Would you refuse to forgive?

Would you ignore your family?

Would you remain silent about Jesus?

Or would you say:

“Lord, today belongs to You.”

Psalm 90:12 gives us the answer:

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

The wise person doesn’t merely count his years.

The wise person makes his years count.

  1. OUR ULTIMATE HOPE IS JESUS CHRIST

Living as though today is our last day does not mean living in fear.

For the believer, death is not the end.

Jesus said:

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”
— John 11:25

And Jesus promised:

“Because I live, you will live also.”
— John 14:19

Therefore, the Christian can face today with confidence.

If today is our last day on earth, Christ is still our Savior.

If tomorrow comes, Christ is still our Lord.

If Jesus returns, we belong to Him.

If we die, we will be with Him.

That is our hope.

CONCLUSION — LIVE TODAY FOR ETERNITY

Psalm 90:12 says:

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

We don’t know how many days remain.

But we know what we should do with today.

Today, forgive.

Today, love.

Today, pray.

Today, repent.

Today, obey.

Today, serve.

Today, preach Christ.

Today, encourage someone.

Today, make things right.

Today, live for Jesus.

Because today may be the only day you have.

And one day, every one of us will stand before God.

Jesus said:

“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”
— Matthew 25:13

So let us live every day with one prayer:

“Lord Jesus, if today is my last day, let me live it for Your glory. Let me love the people You have placed around me. Let me forgive those who have hurt me. Let me share Your Gospel with those who need You. Let me finish my race faithfully and be ready to meet You. Amen.”

FINAL CHALLENGE

Don’t live tomorrow’s life today.
Don’t waste today’s opportunity waiting for tomorrow.
Don’t postpone obedience.
Don’t postpone forgiveness.
Don’t postpone salvation.
Don’t postpone serving God.

Live today as though it is your last day—
and live today for Jesus as though you will serve Him forever.

“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21

Amen.
