Choose the Narrow Way, build on the Rock, and Do the Father’s Will

Sermon on the Mount:

Main Text: – Matthew 7:13–29. – Theme: True Christianity is not merely about hearing Jesus—it is about choosing His way, recognizing truth, doing God’s will, and building our lives upon His Word.

Introduction: –

Matthew 7:13–29 brings us to the climax of Jesus. Jesus does not leave His listeners with information alone. He brings them to a decision.

Throughout this passage, Jesus presents a series of contrasts:

Two gates — narrow and wide
Two ways — difficult and easy
Two kinds of prophets — true and false
Two kinds of disciples — genuine and false
Two houses — one on the rock and one on the sand
Two foundations — obedience to Christ or merely hearing His words

The question is not simply, “Have you heard Jesus?”

The real question is: – “What are you doing with what Jesus has said?”

Jesus is calling us from religion to relationship, from profession to obedience, and from hearing to doing.

ENTER THROUGH THE NARROW GATE

Matthew 7:13–14

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction…” (Matt. 7:13, KJV)

Jesus begins with a command: “Enter.”

Christianity is not merely admiring Jesus from a distance. There must be a personal response to Christ.

The wide gate is attractive because it requires little sacrifice. Wide gate is a metaphor used by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount. It represents an easy, popular way of living that focuses on self-dependence, superficial actions, and human desires, which ultimately leads to spiritual ruin or destruction.

The broad way allows people to live according to their own desires.

But Jesus says: “Few there be that find it.”

The narrow way is not popular, but it leads to life.

What is the narrow gate?

Ultimately, the narrow gate points us to Jesus Christ Himself.

Jesus said: – “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

The narrow way means:

Christ instead of self
obedience instead of rebellion
holiness instead of compromise
truth instead of deception
surrender instead of self-rule

The world says, “Do whatever makes you happy.”

Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

The world says, “Everyone is doing it.”

Jesus says, “Enter through the narrow gate.”

Powerful truth

The popular way is not necessarily the right way.

A road can be crowded and still lead to destruction.

Therefore, don’t ask:

“How many people are going this way?”

Ask:

“Is Jesus leading me this way?”

BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS:-

Matthew 7:15–20 (Jesus immediately warns):

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (Matt. 7:15)

Notice something important: the wolves are wearing sheep’s clothing.

False teaching does not always look obviously false.

It may sound spiritual.

It may use Bible verses.

It may talk about God.

It may even perform impressive religious activities.

Jesus therefore tells us to examine the fruit.

“Ye shall know them by their fruits.” (Matt. 7:16)

A tree is ultimately revealed by what it produces.

The test is fruit.

Not:

popularity
personality
impressive appearance
eloquence
crowds
titles
outward religious activity

But fruit.

The question is:

What kind of life is this ministry producing?

Is it producing:

holiness?
humility?
love?
truth?
repentance?
obedience?
Christlikeness?

The Holy Spirit produces fruit that reflects Christ (Gal. 5:22–23).

Application

We should not be fascinated merely by gifts.

We must examine character.

Gifts can attract people, but character reveals the person.

NOT EVERYONE WHO SAYS “LORD, LORD” BELONGS TO CHRIST:-

Matthew 7:21–23:- This is perhaps the most frightening warning in the passage.

Jesus says: “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven…” (Matt. 7:21)

Notice that these people call Jesus “Lord.”

They even say:

“Have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?” (Matt. 7:22)

These are religious people.

They have religious language.

They have religious activities.

They have supernatural experiences.

But Jesus says:- “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matt. 7:23)

This should make every believer examine his or her heart.

There is a difference between:

Knowing about Jesus
and
knowing Jesus.

There is a difference between:

Doing things for Jesus
and
living in fellowship with Jesus.

There is a difference between:

religious activity
and
spiritual transformation.

The greatest question

Jesus does not say:

“Did you do enough religious works?”

He says:

“I never knew you.”

The Christian life begins with a relationship with Christ.

Paul could say:

“That I may know him…” (Philippians 3:10).

GOD IS LOOKING FOR OBEDIENCE, NOT MERELY PROFESSION:-

Matthew 7:21 says: “He that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

Jesus connects genuine discipleship with doing God’s will.

This does not mean that we earn salvation by our works.

Salvation is by God’s grace through faith (Eph. 2:8–9).

But genuine faith produces obedience.

James says:

“Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:26)

Therefore:

Obedience does not purchase salvation; obedience demonstrates genuine faith.

A changed heart produces a changed life.

If Christ has truly become Lord, His lordship will eventually affect:

our speech
our relationships
our finances
our marriage
our attitudes
our private life
our priorities
our treatment of others
our response to temptation

BUILD YOUR LIFE ON THE ROCK:-

Matthew 7:24–27

Jesus now gives one of the greatest illustrations in Scripture.

Two men build houses.

Both hear Jesus.

Both build.

Both face storms.

The difference is the foundation.

Jesus says:

“Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man…” (Matt. 7:24)

The wise man:

HEARS + DOES.

The foolish man:

HEARS + DOES NOT DO.

Notice something important:

Both men heard.

Both built.

Both houses probably looked good.

But the storm revealed the foundation.

That means you cannot always determine spiritual reality by outward appearance.

The storm reveals what the foundation was made of.

THE STORM WILL TEST EVERY FOUNDATION:-

Jesus says:- “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house…” (Matt. 7:25)

Notice that the storm came to both houses.

Following Christ does not mean that we will never experience storms.

There will be:

sickness and weakness
disappointment
rejection
financial pressure
family problems
temptation
persecution
spiritual warfare
unanswered questions
unexpected circumstances

The promise is not:

“You will never have a storm.”

The promise is:

“Your house can stand when the storm comes.”

Why?

“For it was founded upon a rock.” (Matt. 7:25)

JESUS CHRIST IS OUR ROCK:-

Paul says:- “For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)

The foundation of the Christian life is not:

human wisdom
denomination
tradition
personality
emotions
religious experience
money
success
reputation

Our foundation is Jesus Christ and His Word.

Paul declares:- “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)

The question is not whether your house looks impressive.

The question is:

What is underneath it?

You can build a beautiful spiritual-looking life on sand.

But when the storm comes, the foundation will be revealed.

HEARING THE WORD IS NOT ENOUGH:-

This is the central message of Matthew 7:24–27.

Jesus says:- “Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them…” (v. 24)

The problem with the foolish man was not that he never heard.

He heard but did not obey.

Many Christians spend years hearing sermons.

They attend Bible studies.

They read books.

They listen to preaching.

They know many Scriptures.

But Jesus asks:

“Are you doing what you hear?”

Knowing the Bible without obeying the Bible can produce religious knowledge without spiritual transformation.

Therefore:

Don’t only hear about forgiveness—forgive.

Don’t only hear about love—love.

Don’t only hear about holiness—pursue holiness.

Don’t only hear about prayer—pray.

Don’t only hear about faith—trust God.

Don’t only hear about evangelism—share Christ.

Don’t only hear about surrender—surrender.

Don’t only hear about the Cross—die to self and follow Christ.

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS:-

Matthew 7:28–29:- The people were astonished because:

“He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” (Matt. 7:29)

Jesus did not merely teach opinions.

He spoke with authority.

His Word has authority over our:

beliefs
behavior
priorities
relationships
desires
decisions
future

The final question is therefore not:

“What do I think?”

It is:

“What has Jesus said?”

And when Jesus has spoken, the proper response is:

“Yes, Lord.”

THREE QUESTIONS FOR EVERY BELIEVER

Matthew 7:13–29 forces us to examine ourselves.

WHICH WAY AM I WALKING?

Am I walking the broad way of self and worldly compromise?

Or am I walking the narrow way of Christ?

2. WHAT FRUIT IS MY LIFE PRODUCING?

Can people see Christ in my:

character?
speech?
relationships?
decisions?
private life?

3. WHAT IS MY FOUNDATION?

When the storm comes, will my life stand?

Is my foundation:

Christ + His Word + obedience?

Or:

self + feelings + human wisdom?

CONCLUSION: CHOOSE TODAY

Jesus places before us two gates, two ways, two kinds of trees, two kinds of disciples, and two foundations.

The message is simple but extremely serious:

Choose the narrow gate.
Reject falsehood.
Examine your fruit.
Know Christ genuinely.
Do the Father’s will.
Hear and obey His Word.
Build your life upon Christ the Rock.

The greatest tragedy would be to spend our lives saying:

“Lord, Lord,”

while never truly surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus.

And the greatest blessing is to hear Christ say:

“Well done.” (cf. Matt. 25:21)

🔥 Closing Challenge

Today, Jesus is asking each of us:

Which gate have you entered?

Which road are you walking?

What fruit are you producing?

Do you truly know Christ?

Are you doing the Father’s will?

What is your foundation?

Because sooner or later, the storm will come.

And when it comes, the question will not be:

“How beautiful was your house?”

The question will be:

“Was your house built upon the Rock?”

Jesus Christ is the Rock.

Build on Him.
Trust Him.
Obey Him.
Follow Him.

And when the storm comes, you will stand.

Lord Jesus, help us not merely to hear Your Word but to obey it. Search our hearts and reveal anything in us that is false, worldly, or disobedient. Lead us through the narrow gate and keep us on the narrow way. Produce Your fruit in our lives. Deliver us from empty religious activity and give us a genuine relationship with You. Help us build our lives upon You, the Rock, so that when the storms of life come, we will not
